“I know it’s in here somewhere,” Gwen says as she roots around her room. The place is an absolute mess, just an explosion of designer labels and tissue paper.

She opens and closes the drawers of her “desk,” which I doubt she’s ever used for anything but doing her makeup in the giant mirror she’s hung above it.

She sits down on the carpet and starts to remove things from the bottom drawer: a pencil sharpener made by Tiffany and Co., although there is not a pencil in sight; a single Gucci flip-flop; a book about the pets of the Kardashian family; a Ziploc bag full of loose AirPods, mostly lefts; a key chain made to look like a flask; a flask made to look like a bracelet; three different sizes of jade rollers; and a $2,000 designer fabric pouch sewn to look like a brown paper bag.

“Ah!” Gwen pulls a piece of notebook paper from the bottom. “Ta-da!” She waves the paper in triumph. “Here it is.”

Detective Carney grabs the paper impatiently. It says “LIT LAIR CONTRACT” in large letters across the top.

“We made this at our first house meeting, after Sydney threatened to kick Cami out over that whole Parker fiasco,” Gwen explains.

Carney examines the document with a furrowed brow, turning it over. “Is this signed in glitter?”

“Glitter gel pen,” Gwen explains. “Pink, of course.” She smiles. “But it’s all very official and legally binding. We even had it notarized.”

“I can see that.” Carney scratches his mustache.

“Right, anyway,” I say. “As you can see, it’s right there in black and white, or, uh, pink and glitter, I guess. Sydney didn’t have the power to kick anyone out. It’s majority rule for anyone to move out or in. Her parents may own the house, but she didn’t have any sort of power over us. We were all equals.”

Carney hands the contract to a cop waiting in the doorway, who shoves it into a plastic bag labeled evidence. “That’s all we need from you for now, Mr. Campbell.”

They file out of the room, giving no indication as to whether this eased their suspicion of me. But my interview is over now, at least, so that’s something.

Head ducked down, I walk toward the door.

“Hey, Tuck, where you going?” Gwen calls after me.

But there’s no way I’m hanging out in her room. Not during the day. Not with cops crawling around, waiting for me to incriminate myself further.
